You don’t have very many furniture store options where you live, but dang it you don’t want to compromise on style!! And even if you do have lots of options nearby, online furniture shopping is a fantastic way to get what you are looking for and often times CHEAPER. It can be a scary proposition, buying furniture sight unseen but I’ve got a few tips that can help guide you to an online success story of furniture love! Just think of me as match.com only for furniture!
1. Reviews are your best friend.
This is probably my biggest tip and bit of advice to keep in mind. Find some pieces you like and read as many reviews as you can find. These are your biggest weapon against a furniture fail moment. It will tell you everything from the true color (does it look like the pic?) to comfort level. The more you find and read of these the more accurate an idea you will have of what the piece is like in person.

2. Pay close attention to measurements.
When you see furniture pieces in person you can visually see how big/small it is. Online it’s just photos, make sure you carefully measure your space (and door frame!!) when you find something you love. It would be awful to order and anxiously await your new furniture only to find it’s too big to fit through the door or too small for your space.
3. Read up on material options and the best option for you.
When you order online there is often the added benefit of not only customizing multiple color options but material options as well. You are lusting for the velvet (because who wouldn’t?!) but is it going to stand up to your busy house of crazy kids? Read the deets on what that velvet material is made of and then do a little research to make sure it will work for your home. (Check out my post on best upholstery options for busy homes to help you out!) On the flip side is the linen soft or scratchy? The reviews will help with this too but if you pay close attention to what the linen is comprised of (it should give you that info under details) you will have a better idea.
4. Always check and double check the return policy!!
Most sites offer return policies with you just paying the return shipping. (unless there’s a defect or damage) Some charge a small % as a handling and stocking fee. You just have to check into the return policy and make sure you understand exactly what you would be dealing with *just in case* you don’t like it.
If you are not in a hurry to buy your new furniture, you have the potential to save even more $$. Shop several sites and keep an eye out for sales! Not only will you see a wide variety of furniture styles but most online sites rotate sales regularly. Just check in on the site every now and then, or sign up for their email list! You will get annoying emails BUT you will also be notified when sales start! It’s all about saving $$ without sacrificing style! One other option, you can do a google search for coupon codes for whatever site you are looking to purchase from and see if there are any out there. I have found 15% off codes just by doing google searches.
Buying furniture online doesn’t have to be a nightmare waiting to happen, just keep in mind the 5 tips above and shop away! And what’s better than shopping from the comfort of your home in your pj’s and buying clearance or sale price pieces you love? Saving money AND getting a fab piece, what’s better than that?!
Have you purchased furniture online? What was your experience and do you have any tips of your own to share? I always love to hear from you!
