What Would Tina Do?

A Barrel or a Bench? Thinking Outside the Box!

I’m back with another quick and (hopefully) inspiring what would Tina do post.  These posts are all about coming up with new ways to use things!  Some prior ideas I’ve shared were using vintage cast iron spindles for countertop supports and adapting candle holders into a necklace display!  (Check out the What Would Tina Do section for more!!)

Today I’m sharing a couple of “so simple why didn’t I think of that before?!” things that I’ve done.  The first involves this fab barrel.  I found it at a local brewery that brings them in from whisky distilleries after they use them.  Then they age their beer in them to get some of that yum whisky-ness in it.  Once finished with the barrels, every once in awhile they sell them to the public.  One oh happy day, we took my brother in law with his family there to visit and wouldn’t ya know it they were selling 2 barrels!!! One was already sold which left me with the better one!

Here is the barrel in it’s original location next to the entry bench!!

We loaded that heavy sucker up in the rental van my in-laws had (wouldn’t fit in ours with our hoard of children) and off we went.  I initially had it set up by the entryway for a side table next to the bench.

And now here it is in all it’s bench-like glory.

After awhile I wanted to move things around and freshen things up.  A lil brainstorming led to trying this!  We set the barrel on it’s side and now it works as a bench!  We used some wooden shims we had in the garage and wedged them underneath to hold it in place.  It smells so good and brings so much character.

The next quick idea that’s so simple I kick myself.  Is the vintage bowling set! I picked this up and debated about what to do with it.  I tried a few different things but nothing was quite right.

There sits that lovely set on the left!  And my epic camel saddle is now living in here!

Eventually I found this amazeballs old wire basket and it hit me like lightning, put the bowling set IN the basket!  I know right, so simple it’s ridiculous.  And it’s such a subtle, but fun and quirky statement.  How many people have a vintage bowling set sitting in an old basket by their front door?!

Remember……think outside the box!!  You’ll be amazed what you can come up with that you absolutely love!

I’d love to hear from you!  What’s something you have done that was unexpected or totally outside the box?!

We’ll see what I come up with next!!

  1. Great find! I love the innovation behind it. Those quirky details are my favorite parts in a good design, and you do them so well. I’m amazed at how many styles you’re able to cohesively seam together for a beautiful home. It’s a serious talent! Right now the outside-the-box idea I’m most happy with is sticking a big metal flamingo planter in my (totally unfinished) living room as a place to hold blankets. I love walking into a room, any room, and doing a double take over something completely unexpected.

    1. Thank you so much Jill! Those are the things that I enjoy incorporating the most, it gives a whole room personality and fun and unique-ness. OMG, I LOVE the flamingo planter idea!! Color, quirk and a sense of humor; all the best elements of great decor…I think you’re def on to something girl! I can’t wait to see your living room when it’s finished!
