It’s that time folks!!  The time you have ALL been waiting for…..ok maybe the time I’ve been waiting for!  The reveal of the fall one room challenge project, my secret garden in wonderland office/classroom space.  And I am in LURVE!!!

If you need a lil rewind to bring you up to speed check out the previous posts on the process of this project…week 1, week 2, week 3, week 4, week 5, week 6!

This space was one I wanted to be inspiring for our kids (we do school in here) and inspiring for me.  I love nature and quirky colorful eclectic spaces so incorporating those aspects into an inspirational space was a tall order.  I developed the idea of a secret garden meets Alice in Wonderland.  From there it was a dive head first and worry about the bottom later kind of project.  With that being said here we go!

I’m going to throw some before and after action in here too, just to help illustrate how far this space has come and what a humongo transformation it has undergone!

Here we are looking into the room before. A large storage cabinet was to the side of the fireplace on the left, not much with the window and a large work table in the center of the room.  Dull, uninspiring and just kinda boring.

Annndddd AFTER!  Same shot looking in from the door. The fireplace is to the left (where you see the blue bench) that large storage cabinet is gone and the table has moved to the window! (more details below!) And isn’t it so much purdier?!

Here’s before, this is the main focal wall (the only solid wall in the space, directly opposite the fireplace) with the table centered on it.  The same blue paint from when I painted it as a nursery for our son some 5 years ago. Embarrassing!  You can also see our whiteboards that we use for schoolwork which are fugly.  I had to find a way to disguise these as they are necessary for us to use but who wants to look at them when they’re NOT in use?!

Voila!  My faux greenery wall with a set of antique french doors.  This whole wall pulls together my secret garden in wonderland concept.  Don’t you wanna just walk right through the door?

A nice close up shot of the actual texture and realistic effect this greenery gives.  It really looks and feels real!

Here’s what is actually behind the door, although I would much rather let your imagination run wild with the possibilities!  I put the white boards here, so when we want to use them they are easily accessible and available, but when not in use we close the door and enjoy this beautiful wall.

This is the wall opposite the window, you can see the white boards on the main focal wall on the left.  The left door is the closet, where we added several shelves and some cubby cabinets to organize and store our books, printer and office materials.  This allowed me to remove that big ole cabinet you saw in the first pic and this vintage workbench.  The right door is the entry door.

Now instead of that workbench I have a lush emerald green velvet sofa with marble nesting tables sitting pretty between the closet and entry doors.  This sofa gives the hubs and myself somewhere to sit when going over homework or working together on projects.  Our littles like to color at the tables!

From the entry door looking at the focal wall. The black pattern in the pillows ties in with the black pattern of the drapes and gives some fresh modernish funk. (doin a little shimmy as I say that)

The antique etched mirror I scored at a local flea.  I was originally planning a diy mirror project and stumbled on this gorgeousness you see before you.  I ’bout fell over when I laid eyes on it, that most perfect moment when what you envision is sitting right in front of you.  There are elements reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland in the room, the looking glass being one of them.

I am head over heels for these tables, so incredibly functional yet beautiful.  They also have a classic yet modern feel.  On top of them I have some of my antique books and the blue glass piece, it’s like a kaleidoscope, you look through it to the dried flowers on the wheels at the end.  Also a local flea find!

You can see the pink fluffy floor pillows from the moodboard on the left, my littles bust those out when they want to sit on the floor and color at the tables.  Moving around to the other wall with the fireplace, to the right….

We have the before. The fireplace just floating kind of in the middle with that giant mess of a cabinet.  Entrance door is there on the left, with that raw edge board propped in the corner.  Real like folks, I clearly didn’t pretty it up.

And the after!  I styled up the fireplace with a bench I already owned and reupholstered myself with some scrap leather from a local flea vendor and some fun crystals, feathers and branches.  The vases and branches draw your eye up and frame the fireplace bringing in natural textures with a bit of bling.  And the bench grounds the fireplace, along with giving us more seating for any of our 6 family members.

There was a big gaping awkward space above the fireplace.  Artwork just wasn’t quite right so I came up with this!  It’s a large vintage frame with chips missing that I picked up at a flea for $15, an outdoor wreath and a woven animal head, both of which I already had.  Whimsical, fun with lots of texture and natural elements (secret garden again). And pops of white to tie into the marble.

On to the before of the window wall.  I mean I can’t think of anything nice to say about this one.  Ermmm, it’s bright?

Now!  A straight on shot of this wall from the sofa.  There’s our diy hanging desk, along with other lovelies like an antique windsor bench which gives us so much great extra seating.  When you have 4 kids doing homework at the same time, it’s really helpful!

This shot shows you another angle of the window wall and how it plays into the greenery wall.  The shutters bring the green color around while adding another antique element.  And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the acrylic victorian chairs on either side!

A cool piece is this old grandfather clock face, the paintings at the top spin!

I brought my animal vases in here, I think they work perfectly sittin all pretty on the desk.  While you’re lookin at this one take a gander at the glass underneath…..

As the desk is an old storefront door, I created a shadow box using the large window of the door and the glass top.  I put some of my antique books in here along with “drink me” like bottles and some old skeleton keys.  There are also some faux flowers in here for color and that gardeny feel.

You can see the detailed curves of the victorian chair here better, along with the creamy white sheepskin pillow.  You know for lumbar support, cause some of us aren’t as young as we used to be, ahem.

You can see the detailing of the windsor bench, it’s made completely of dowels.  Old school craftsmanship that’s sturdy and makes me wish for those days of yore.  Why can’t they make furniture like this anymore, amiright?!  It’s completely unfinished, I purchased it from an antique dealer where it had already been stripped.  I love the raw look of the wood.  I have no plans to mess with it.

Of course I would be doing a genuine disservice if I didn’t mention this incredible artwork by Mary Catheryn from Copper Corners Art.  She also did the painting featured in my spring ORC space.  We collaborated on these pieces for the perfect garden feel from color to style.  Cool tidbit: they look just as awesome upside down!  Who doesn’t love versatility?!

My fun diy paper chandelier project got a lil addition.  I picked up some twinkle lights for $8 and wove them through the spokes.  Umm can we say magical?!

And there we have it!  The finished office/classroom project.  I am beyond ecstatic with the way it all came together.  I started this project with an idea.  To create a fun, functional and inspiring space.  Our kids learn in here (we homeschool) and I work in here so I wanted it to be a space that sparks their imaginations and opens all of our minds to the endless possibilities that creativity brings.  We enjoy spending time here now.  The little boys color at the nesting tables while I go over homework with the older kids, chillin on that fab green sofa.

I hope I have inspired you to create a space you love for yourself.  It’s worth it, YOU are worth it.

Next week I’m doing a post dedicated to what specific items I used and where YOU can get them!  If you are interested in anything here you def won’t want to miss that one!
