Small Change That Equals Big Impact!

Popping in today with a quick lil post to share with you how one small change can lead to a big impact in your space.  Our family room, which I LOVE has always had an accent wall. The wall with the fireplace, it has always been painted a different color than the rest of the walls since shortly after we moved in.  It was all a terrible tan brownish color (I HATE brown BTW) and I got a wild hair and threw on some dark gray paint in a frenzy of impatience one night after a month in the house.  It wasn’t awesome but it was 10x better than the brown. (eww)

Fast forward and we did this awesome metallic effects finish on it (see the post with steps on how we did it here).  It was a bit time consuming (due to the ceiling heights) but SO worth it!  The only downside was finding artwork and wall decor pieces to put here as the almost pattern like finish on the wall made most things look wonky.  We figured it out though and loved it for a year and half.

Until I got the hair again.  I started feeling like I wanted to freshen things up (I blame the weather) and decided to paint this whole wall the same color as the rest of the space. (Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore) I love this color!  It reads a warm yet cool calming greige and throws a different color depending on the light.  It’s just a beautiful, great for any space, color. I thought no brainer, makes complete sense, and I’m sure I’m gonna love it.

Then we did it……the other night.  And the whole family went “the wall looks so sad”  I thought they were overreacting until I climbed down from the ladder, where I was painting at the ceiling, and said “oh….it does look so sad” and then “maybe it will look better in the daylight”  Then it’s daylight and I’m still not loving it, so I decided to mess around with some of my artwork.  Determined to not let the pain I felt in my gut for painting over our hard work and beautiful patina take over.  I swapped some art for other pieces around the house and voila!  I love it!

The difference is the wall color (revere pewter) and some art I had in other parts of the house.  Otherwise all the furniture, most of the pillows, rug and accessories are the same!

It makes the art pop and gives me much more versatility in what I can use!  I can see mirrors, different art pieces, maybe even a small gallery wall!  It also lets the fireplace pop more than with the patina wall, you really see the floor to ceiling stone.

I wanted to share this to show you how such a small thing like painting 1 wall made such a HUGE difference in the overall appearance of a space.  Whether it’s new bold colored drapes or flashy pillows or an accent wall small changes really can impact the whole feel so don’t be afraid to give something a try! (despite my short lived panic attack “what have I done” moment it turned into a big “yay I totally knew what I was doing” moment! 😉)

What is a small thing you have done that made a big impact to one of your spaces?  I always love to hear from you so pop in your thoughts below in the comments!
