What Do I Do With Tall Ceilings?! 4 Easy Ways to Decorate Your Walls At Any Height…

how to decorate walls at any height, what to put on our walls, decorating walls, tapestry, accent wall, stikwood, large art, high ceilings, tall ceilings, home decor, interior design, how to style walls

I recently ran across this topic the other day and thought what a great question!  So I’m going to share my thoughts on this….and it applies to all walls not just extra tall ones so hang tight with me!

I have ceilings ranging from 9ft to 20 ft. and here is what I do with mine.

  1. Accent walls are ALWAYS a good idea.  I don’t care who tells you it’s out of date, or on trend or not on trend or whatevs.  The kicker is to think of accent walls in a new way.  This doesn’t mean you have to just paint one wall a different color (although potentially fabulous) it can mean wallpaper murals, handpainted murals, wood walls, tile walls, peel and stick wallpaper walls, etc. The list is as big as your imagination.

Case in point.  We recently did this project with Stikwood and it was THE perfect addition to this room.  Here are our 20ft ceilings and this wall has bugged me for years, literally.  I used a reclaimed wood product in a pale pink tone to compliment the fireplace and ran it in a cool classic pattern….all…the….way….up.  It does 3 things.  1. It makes it interesting 2. It gives the room more texture without being overwhelming  3. It draws the eye all the way up highlighting the ceiling height.  And it gives a nice backdrop for any art or other decorative item I will probably swap around on here!

2. Oversized art.  If you have a large wall space (high ceilings or no) an oversized piece of art can fill the space in an aesthetically                           pleasing way while making it SUPER simple to switch out for something new later.  These ceilings are 9ft (the ceiling is just above                     this shot)

I kinda did both 1 and 2 on this wall but focusing on the second for a hot minute.  I put a large original painting here (which is coincidentally hiding the tv!) to give the wall a focal point and provide the sofa with a base. (The wall is a metallic effects treatment, read the full DIY deets here)  The painted texture gives you an interesting element alone BUT the sofa would be lost without a base piece.  So I used a big ole piece of fab art!

       3.  Gallery wall.  Again, I don’t care if some peeps say the gallery wall is out in the trend department.  There will ALWAYS be a gallery wall sitch.  It’s a fantastic way to display small pieces of art and pics while filling up a large space.  Typically much friendlier on the wallet than a large oversized piece of art and can be done by simply taking pieces you have around the house and compiling them together for a gallery wall!

Here is one of my gallery walls (For more on creating the perfect gallery wall go here).  It goes up along both sides of the staircase.  Note the cohesive frames and mix of pics and diy art!

4.  Tapestry.  I know what you’re thinking…tapestry?!  That’s like 1800’s art.  Yes, BUT it can make a maja pop in a space. Below I have a                    suzani but you can hang a vintage throw, rug, macrame piece or quilt.  Anything you love and want to display!

I have my vintage suzani draped over a curtain rod on the wall and it makes a statement in the best way.  When I want to change it I just pull it off the rod and throw it on a bed, couch, table, etc!

Those are my top 4 go to’s when I’m looking at a big blank wall space.  If you have high ceilings highlight them!  They give the room an airy feel and you want people to notice them.  If you don’t have high ceilings, no biggie!  You can still apply any of the above to your walls.  I have a wallpaper mural in a 9ft room as well as the above paint treatment!  Work with what ya got and make a most perfect statement for you.
