One Room Challenge (ORC)

The Sophisticated Whimsical Home Office One Room Challenge Reveal!!

The day we have all been waiting for is finally here…..it’s reveal day, EEEEKK!!!  And I am beyond excited to share it with you!  I am madly head over heels for this space and LOVE coming in here and working…or online shopping, you know tomatoes, tamatoes.

It’s cozy, it’s comfy, it’s inspiring and it’s perfect for me.  Let’s recap the original design plan for this space before I show ya the good part!  (You can check out the full design plan in week 1!)

Here is what this room looked like before I began this challenge.   It was a lovely dining room but a space we never used.

Dark gray paint surrounded the mural, the ceiling was boring builder beige and it wasn’t practical for our lifestyle (we eat in the kitchen.)

This is my design plan.  If you remember, I decided to keep the mural that I already had in here when developing this design.  Besides working around the mural I had to figure out a few things….1. Doors for our 2 massive 6×8 arches  2. Seating for my kiddos  3. Comfy and whimsical seating for behind the desk  4. Storage and  5. To be inspired when I’m in here.  Let’s see how I fared!

Here is your view looking into my new office!! Say whaaattt??!!

You can see one of the massive arches that I needed to figure out a door solution too! And hello mural my old friend (Anyone hearing that song in their head?  No, just me…that happens a lot.)

This is a closer view standing in the arch looking in.  (The ceiling, brick and paint colors are all in my post from week 2!)  The tray ceiling was always meant to be a major focal point but I had to blend it into the mural, so I chose a color that is almost an exact match to the blue in the upper right corner.  It adds drama without taking away from it.

How about that killer vintage rug?!  My girl Charlotte Tully from The Elegant Nomad hooked me up with this one of a kind piece.  (All of her info coming up in the sources post, she’s got the most incredible pieces you are going to want to check out!!)

Oh hello peekaboo shot!

I always love to bring in loads of texture through accessories like vintage textiles, faux fur, stone, metals and glass.

How about a straight on view to get the whole wall, desk, cloud sofa, mural combo?! (check out how I diy’d that raw edge desk here in week 4)  Then there’s the statement seating behind the desk from my moodboard!

I’m not a formal chair behind a desk person.  I like to sit cross legged, lean back and chillax so I wanted something with more fun and pizzazz.  This sofa nailed it in every way…and it came from Amazon!!

Audible gasp…for reals!  I’ll be sharing the juicy deets and links for you in the next post, don’t worry I wouldn’t leave ya hangin like that. xxx

You can really see my less than $40 custom desk legs here, with their brass finish and a punch of pink. oolala  How about that hand chair?!  It’s a sculpture and a chair, perfect size for a tush to sit in and chat with me.

Rotating to the side of the room you can see the window and the start of my seating area!  As I mentioned earlier, I have loads of kids (4 and a hubs) that come in with questions, to hang out or even do their homework.

That means I needed an area where they could sit comfortably.  I was initially thinking a sectional and then these vintage mint beauties came along.

I popped in a vintage rattan heart screen and some plants in the corner.  I have lots of plants in here, not just because I love them but it helped create the atmosphere that originates in the mural.  That of an outdoor oasis where anything is possible.

Here is a great shot of some of the texture I added to the space.   It’s also how I incorporated lots of color, mama’s gotta have fun with color right?!

I have a vintage suzani draped over the sofa, an ombre sheepskin pillow, a vintage textile pillow and a hot pink somethin somethin for good measure.  And a crystal for all the good vibes, you can never have too many of those.

Mixing new with vintage pieces, in both furniture and textiles, gives you a very lived in and interesting space!

Here’s a shot of the full corner and those fab vintage mint sofas I scored for $100 for the pair and the hanging swag table with my diy capiz pendant light!  (You can read all about the sofas and my diy pendant light here in week 5)  Plenty of comfy seating for the whole fam!

I always like to have a candle in pretty much every room.  It creates a warmth and glow that says “please come in and relax”

One of my fave pieces is this vintage sign.  I nabbed this at a local barn sale this last spring.  I have been waiting patiently for an office space to use it in, and it’s the perfect piece for this spot.

It’s inspiring, it’s motivational and screams “I am woman hear me roar!” To me it does, to my husband it says “womans club” haha

This is a double/triple duty piece.  It’s a pouf, it’s a stool, it’s a side table!

Shifting counter clockwise, (seating area on the right) here are our DIY barn doors!  I’m super happy with the way these came together and for $108 per door, you can’t beat that.  (You can check out how we did it here in week 3!)

They glide along smoothly and do a fantastic job of closing off this room when I need it to be while still allowing both the light in and keeping me informed of what is happening outside of the room.  (Mom’s you all know what I’m talking about amiright?!)

The etching in the glass gives the look of the steel doors I had in my design plan moodboard!

Here’s a shot from the outside looking in.  I have the doors partially open here so you can get a glimpse of the other perspective!  Please ignore the dusty swipes and handprints…because kids.  I swear these were clean a couple of days before this shot, real life my friends.

What’s the first thing you notice looking in here?

And lastly, a small glimpse at the last wall of the office which is opposite the window. (To the right in the photo above)  This is my desk, the storage cabinet and the other door.  One of the fun things about these doors is that they act as their own art piece when they are not in use!

Here’s a nice close up of those saxy legs!  And look at that texture on the live edge bark of the table.

That brings us back as we have circled around to the very beginning!

This has been a fun, inspiring and creative project for me.  I had a vision for this space and it came together beautifully.  I was thinking bold, fun, inspiring, interesting and inviting and I feel pretty darn good about hitting every single one of those.  Not too mention loads of DIY projects and budget friendly finds.

I always love participating in the One Room Challenge, it really let’s us show you, the audience, how we put together spaces and hopefully gives you some ideas of your very own!  I’d love to hear if you have gotten any ideas from this space or your thoughts on how it all came together.  Hit me up in the comments or send me an email, I always love to hear from you!

And don’t forget to check out my fellow ORC guest participants to see how their projects came together as well as the featured designers over on the ORC blog.  There are some knockout spaces!!
